A desert photoshoot is one of the things people picture when they think of Dubai: rolling dunes, golden sands, warm light, a flying dress caught in the wind. It’s also one of the easiest shoots to get wrong if you go at the wrong time or wear the wrong colours. Here’s how to plan a desert photoshoot in Dubai that’s worth the drive, from the best desert location to what to bring and how long it takes.

Where to go: the best Dubai desert photoshoot locations
- Al Qudra area: about 45 minutes from the Marina, with soft dunes, lakes nearby and wildlife. Easy to reach and popular for couples and families.
- Fossil Rock and Al Madam: bigger, quieter dunes that are good for dramatic skyline-free frames. Al Madam is known for its high dunes.
- Lahbab red dunes: deeper red-orange sand and bigger dunes, about an hour from the city. Great for fashion and dramatic shots.
- Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve area and Bab Al Shams: protected landscape with oryx and gazelles, usually visited with a licensed operator or a resort.
- Desert camps: some offer private setups with rugs, lanterns and Bedouin-style tents for proposals and styled shoots.

When to go
The desert season runs from about October to April. In summer the sand is dangerously hot and the air hazy, so only consider sunrise sessions then. In any month, shoot in the last hour before sunset or the first hour after sunrise. The low sun brings out the ripples in the sand and gives skin a warm glow; this ever-changing desert light is why people travel for it. Midday light is flat and harsh. Getting there
You need a 4×4 to reach good untouched dunes; a regular car will get stuck. Options include a desert transfer with a skilled driver, a photographer who provides transport, or combining the shoot with a desert safari. Allow time for the drive and for finding a clean dune with no tyre tracks. Dune bashing and quad biking leave tracks and noise, so plan the shoot away from them.
What to wear
Strong colours stand out against sand: red, burgundy, emerald, navy, mustard and white. Long flowing dresses, capes and scarves look amazing in the wind, which is why flying dress photoshoots are so popular. Avoid beige and khaki, which disappear into the background. Bring sandals; the sand can still be hot in the late afternoon. Full guide: what to wear for a photoshoot in Dubai.

How long does a desert photoshoot take?
Plan about 60 to 90 minutes of shooting time on location, plus the drive each way. A sunset session usually starts about two hours before sunset so you have time to walk to a clean dune and change outfits. Hair and makeup artists can join on request.
Camera tips for desert photography
- Expose for the skin and let the sky go a little warm; sand fools light meters into underexposing.
- Use a lens hood and change lenses with your back to the wind. Keep sand out of the gear with a cloth cover.
- Shoot a little lower than eye level to make dunes look taller.
Practical tips
- Bring water, sunscreen and wet wipes.
- Sand gets everywhere. Leave expensive jewellery at home and keep phones in a pocket.
- Drones in the desert still need approval; ask your photographer.
- Check photography rules in Dubai if you plan a commercial shoot.
